What is the Better Back Programe?

The Better Back Programme (BBP) is an 8 week programme of exercise and education. Classes will be run on a weekly basis on Tuesdays at 10am and Fridays at 12pm in our Carrickmines Clinic. The classes will take place in our PhysioGym and will be led by our Chartered Physiotherapists Ian Kenny MISCP and Andrew Cullinane MISCP.

The classes will consist of a combination of stretching and mobility exercises, Pilates and strengthening exercises. During the classes there will also be informal information and tips on how best to manage your back pain day to day.

Why are we doing a Better Back Programme?

Low back pain is one of the most common Musculoskeletal Disorders worldwide and affects people of all ages. Low back pain can present as acute, sub-acute or chronic and can be a very debilitating condition. Current research and guidelines suggest that exercise is one of the most effective ways to manage low back pain. Our goal for patients who attend the Better Back Programme is to move and feel better but to also have a better understanding as to how to best manage their back pain.

What do I need for the class?

You do not need a referral from your doctor to participate in this class, however if you are a new patient to us, on your first day we will ask you to complete a questionnaire regarding your health and any medication that you are taking at the time.

If you are currently being seen by one of our physiotherapists here at PhysioCare, they may recommend this class for you. If you are not a previous patient here at PhysioCare and the class was recommended by a friend or family member you can still participate in the class.

The classes will be one hour per week. As they are exercise classes, it is advised that you wear comfortable clothes, ideally tracksuits, with comfortable runners with good grip. We would also advise you bring a bottle of water with you. All of the equipment you need for the class will be on site.
