Incontinence – We Can Help

What is Incontinence?

Bladder dysfunction can take many forms but the most common (and arguably most bothersome) is that of incontinence. This refers to the involuntary leakage and loss of urine. There are three factors which can cause incontinence, these being stress, urge and mixed incontinence. Regardless of the cause, our female Chartered Physiotherapists can treat our female patients for bladder dysfunction and incontinence issues.

Urge: caused by effort, sneezing/coughing, physical exertion.
Stress: caused by a an urgent feeling of wanting to void.
Mixed: caused by a combination of both of the above.

How Common is Incontinence?

This is a common complaint and has been reported in up to 30% of women; although the actual figure may be much higher due to under-reporting to health professionals and on surveys. Due to this, there can be a misconception that incontinence is a normal part of life to expected at certain stages. Yet while it may be common, it does not mean that nothing should be done about it. Physiotherapy treatment can help to ease your symptoms and work towards strengthening the relevant muscles and areas that affect incontinence. Our Women’s Health Physiotherapy service (led by female Chartered Physiotherapists) treat this in our female patients so that they can get and feel better.

How is it Treated?

Incontinence treatment forms part of our Women’s Health Physiotherapy service and therefore you will only be treated by a female Chartered Physiotherapist. Here at PhysioCare, we treat all of our patients on a case-by-case basis. This means that there is no single ‘one-fix’ treatment – it well depend on your particular case and symptoms etc. One crucial method for example is that of pelvic floor exercises. These are used to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles (PFM) and retrain the bladder to strengthen and support it. Examination, assessment and treatment combine with a tailored exercise plan that you can complete at home to help you get and feel better. We also advise on lifestyle changes and interventions that can be incorporated effectively as part of treatment.
